Q: Why do I get the error "NTLM Service Provider not available" when I try to log in via Front Page? - top

In order to achieve maximum security, SSI supports a special mode of authentication for Front Page. This mode may require that the Microsoft Client be loaded on Windows 9X Machines (Windows NT already supports this feature) or that a "Microsoft compatible" client be loaded on non windows machines such as Linux or MAC.

  • To load the Microsoft client on Windows 9X machines: Right Click "Network Nieghborhood", then click "properties", click "add", click "client", click "Microsoft", then click "Client for Microsoft Networks". OK as needed and reboot.
  • To load a "Microsoft Compatible" client on non-Microsoft operating systems please consult your Operating System documentation.

Q: How do I password restrict part or all of my Front Page web site? - top

Front Page sites can be fully restricted by using permissions or partially restricted by utilizing sub webs.

  • To fully restrict a site: From Front Page Explorer click "tools" from the menu bar, then click "permissions". A dialog box will appear listing the specific users that are allowed to have access to your browse, author, or administer your site. Click the "groups" tab at the top of that dialog box. In the groups window (by default) you will see the group "everyone" has been given the browse right, remove that and everyone will have to supply a username and password to access your site.
  • To restrict part of your site create a sub web and then follow the above steps to secure that sub web.

Q: How do I create sub webs on my Front Page web site? - top

In Front Page Explorer select "file" from the menu bar, then select "new", then select "front page web". Name the sub web and be sure that it is being saved on the web server and not on your hard drive. The page should be accessible as www.mydomain.com/subwebName as soon as you finish creating the first web page (default.aspx) in that sub web.

Q: Does SSI have utilities or scripts I can use on my Front Page web site? - top

Check our developers utilities section of the support site frequently. That is where we provide tools for site analysis and tag generation as well as a rotation of neat scripts and active content.

Q: What are Meta Tags?   -  top

Meta tags are like descriptions of your web site that help people find you on the Internet.  They are not seen by browsers of your web site, but search engines find them and use them to help organize sites by what kind of content they have.  We have a handy Meta Tag Builder you can use, but first you should read our support article that gives you some good Meta Tag tips .
