Here is a How To that will help you create and utilize a mailing list right away... ( Power Tips at the end)
  1. Go To www.yourdomainname/mail (example: www.swiftsystems.com/mail)
  2. Log in as your domain mail administrator
  3. Click "List Administration" (bottom right option)
  4. Type in: a name for the list (discussion, updates, etc.), give a description of the list (to help you remember only), and use your id as list administrator. (Click create)
  5. The next screen will give you the options for the list.
  6. If someone asks for help on your list they will get the "help.txt"  so that is a good place to put "list specific" help.  Generic list server help is provided by the server.
  7. Subscribe.txt will be sent when someone is added to the list (to the new user).  That is a good place to put a welcome message with rules, and an e-mail address or instructions on how to get out...
  8. Header and Trailer.txt are just that.
  9. Set the posting options.  We recommend the following settings.  ( check: Reply to list, Disable List command {protects your list member identities}, enable digest mode, and enable subject modification) other settings should be determined based on your needs and should be self explanatory.
  10. Max message size is in bytes (0 = unlimited)  you decide...
  11. Number of recipients means how many will be processed with each cycle.  if you have 50 subscribers, you will send two cycles... sort of tech-weenie stuff (25 default works fine)
  12. The digest options are self explanatory and you can use separator text etc.
  13. To subscribe to this new list send an email to imailsrv@yourdomain.com with: "subscribe <listname> <Real_Name>" (in the body of the message) and the sender of the e-mail will be subscribed to the list and will also be notified.
  14. The commands that can be sent to the server ( imailsrv@yourdomain.com ) in the body of the message are as follows:
  • subscribe <listname> <Real_Name> (ex. subscribe discussion Barbara Nudack) the sender will be added
  • unsubscribe <listname> <Real_Name> or unsubscribe <listname> (ex. unsubscribe discussion) the sender will be removed
  • help will result in a list of valid commands the listserver will accept
  • help <listname> will send the help.txt file you made for this list.
  • list will give a list of lists on this server
  • list <listname> will give a list of users in a list (this can and should be disabled for lists that are on the internet and are not intended to be shared, this and similar commands are how most spammers get their goods and many list servers do not allow this feature to be disabled...)
  • set mode digest <listname> sets you to receive interval mailings from the list
  • set mode standard <listname> sets you back to standard mode (real time list delivery)

These commands can also be put together (on separate lines in the BODY of the message)

example 1:  This will subscribe you to the list and set your mode to digest right away

subscribe discussion Mia Person

set mode digest discussion

example 2: This will subscribe you to the list, set your mode to digest, and then return that lists help file to you.

subscribe discussion Mia Person

set mode digest discussion

help discussion

Remember that COMMANDS MUST BE IN THE BODY of the message, the SUBJECT LINE IS IGNORED by the list server.
